One of natures show offs. Sauromatum venosum or Voodoo Lily is a fun plant for kids, and adults alike. The stems are a dusty lime green, mottled with dark maroon, when the flower emerges it will be quite pungent on the first day.

Though the floral fragrance of the Voodoo Lily is offensive to our noses, it is important to the plant as it is pollinated by flies who love their stinky aroma.

The flower spathes of Voodoo Lily are quite large and from the spathe a long spadix protrudes. The foliage is similar to some gingers. The leaf stem grows upward then the stem turns in a spiral. The pale to mid green leaves fan outward from this spiral.

Voodoo Lily is an easy plant to grow. It can even grow and flower without water or soil (though this won’t do the bulb much good). To grow them on their own, put them on a dish by a sunny window, or in a green house and wait!

Voodoo Lilies grow best in humus rich, moist, well drained soil in filtered light. They also grow well in pots, in which they can be sheltered from frost. Keep Voodoo Lilies moist and well fertilised during active growth. During dormancy they should be left relatively dry.
