Single deep maroon to black blooms. The flowers open amongst mid green foliage. An excellent choice for providing garden contrast. Hollyhock grows well in any well drained soil. Hollyhock likes a full sun position and should be sheltered from strong winds. The tall stems of Hollyhock provide your garden with good vertical interest. They grow vigorously and should be fertilised in spring and summer. Keep Hollyhock just moist when growing. Hollyhock have rounded lobed leaves that grow all along the strong stems. Remove spent flowers from Hollyhock to encourage a second flush and promote a healthy plant. Wait until the seeds have dropped to do this. The botanic name, Alcea originated from the plant species use in medicine. It comes from Altheo which means to heal or to cure.
