The deep green, leathery foliage forms a dense canopy on this hardy, large evergreen shrub, or small tree.
Spring to summer, racemes (to 15cm), of fragrant, white flowers form on the ends of branches. The flowers smell of Hawthorn.
The new stems of Portuguese Laurel are red, they then age to pale grey.
Portuguese Laurel is a useful as a screening plant and can be pruned to form a hedge. It can also be used as a specimen or street tree with a naturally beautiful form. You can also prune them into standards.
Plant Portuguese Laurel in a well drained soil in a full sun to lightly shaded position. Portuguese Laurel takes a while to settle in but once it has establish it is quick to grow.
