Epiphyllum are also known as Orchid Cactus for their beautiful, large flowers in bright colour combinations. The flowers are flared trumpets in single and double layers of petals.
The handsome leaves are flat and fleshy, long and glossy. They are interspersed with deep lobes. The flowers open along the leaves around October/November and from then will bring months of colour. It is a good idea to add some liquid fertiliser fortnightly when they are in flower.
Orchid Cactus grow well in hanging baskets and pots. They like a bright light position, so patios, indoors by a window, under a tree or in an orchid house is perfect.
Orchid Cactus are endemic to the rainforests of South America and the West Indes.
The roots of Orchid Cactus are shallow, they are epiphytic in nature. They are easily damaged so care should be taken when planting. You are more likely to kill them with kindness than neglect so they are a great choice for forgetful gardeners.
