Glory of the Snow is one of the heralds of spring. The dreamy lilac blue flowers open from late winter to early spring. The 3cm blooms are upward facing and have a soft but bright colouring with a white centre. The flowers of Glory of the Snow will last up to two weeks in cool weather. Blooms open on maroon stems, averaging 3-6 per bulb.
The leaves of Glory of the Snow are thick and grass like, with 2-3 per bulb. Foliage dies back late spring for summer and autumn dormancy. It is this foliage that lends them to meadow or lawn plantings.
Glory of the Snow or Chionodoxa luciliae are best grown in cool climates as they need the cold weather to initiate flowering. They are easy care bulbs that should be left in the ground to naturalise (this means you do not have to lift them regularly).
Glory of the Snow will slowly and happily multiply by seed and division (non invasive). Perfect for planting in rock gardens, at the front of beds, in lawn plantings or in pots.
Glory of the Snow bulbs are endemic to the rocky, snow covered slopes of Turkey, where, as the name suggests, they bloom as the snow begins to melt.
