Fragrant flowers in softest pink shades.
Seriously perfume powered, Hyacinths are one of the most fragrant of all the spring bulbs. Combined with their dynamo colours, they really are quite something special. So wonderful are they that it is almost a shame not to plant a few for spring.
Plant Hyacinths anywhere you can enjoy their heady scent, such as along a pathway, in a window box or by your favourite garden chair. In pots you can even bring them indoors to enjoy the delicious fragrance as it wafts through your home.
In the garden, it is a good idea to prepare your soil prior to planting Hyacinth bulbs. Dig through some well rotted manure a few weeks before you put your bulbs in. This increases drainage and adds nutrients to the soil. Hyacinth bulbs are best planted around Mothers Day.
Plant Hyacinths 15-20cm deep in humus rich, moist, well drained soil. Plant the bulbs pointy end up then water in. When planting Hyacinth bulbs it is a good idea to wear gloves as the bulbs have a natural defence in the dust that flakes off the dry skin of the bulb. This can irritate sensitive skin and cause itching, resist the urge to itch if you are affected and wash with warm soapy water.
If you are planting your Hyacinths in pots, plant them so the bulbs are almost touching to create a dense display. You can try mixing with other perennials or bulbs for an extra splash of colour. After planting, position the pot so it is in a shaded spot initially (for around 8 weeks or so). This allows the flower heads to develop slowly so they don`t grow too quickly and flop or emerge only part way from the foliage. As the buds emerge, move them into a lightly shaded area, gradually bringing them into the sunshine. Once the blooms are out you can leave them where they are or take them indoors or wherever you like to enjoy.
