Deep green leaves with silver marbling and a colourful red underside. Occasionally, small white to yellow flower stalks bloom. A nice Terrarium or house plant.
Bring the outside in with your very own Terrarium.
Terrariums are the ultimate in indoor gardening. You can have tremendous fun creating miniature landscapes with these plants. The only limit is your imagination.
Pick a variety of leaf shapes and sizes for your indoor oasis. If Terrariums aren't your thing, you can also use any of these hardy plants for potted displays indoors or on balconies or patios.
They are so easy, simply choose your vessel. You can use a glass bowl, an official terrarium, a hanging glass ball, you can even use a jam jar. To qualify, Terrariums must be clear glass, or plastic, it can be enclosed or open.
To plant your Terrarium, use a good quality potting mix and place this in the bottom of your container. Use a commercial variety as it is sterile. 3-5cm depth is ideal, depending on your Terrarium size. Arrange your plants to best suit yourself. Our tip; it is a good idea to put tall plants in the middle and shorter ones towards the edge. Then water in. The best method of watering is a spray bottle, this reduces the chances of over watering. Spray onto the leaves of the plants and onto the soil surface, allowing it to soak in. You should water as the plants begin to dry out.
Keep in mind the closed Terrariums will have higher humidity so require less watering. When watering Terrariums, it is better to under than over water them. If your Terrarium has a lid, ensure the leaves are dry after watering before replacing the lid. If there is too much moisture the plants may rot.
Place your Terrarium in diffused light, by a window. It is best not to place them in a north facing window as the plants are for the indoors and this direct sunlight will burn them and dry them out.
Taller plants may need their tips pinched out on occasion to keep the growth compact. Turn your Terrarium occasionally to keep growth even. You do not need to fertilise Terrarium plants as you don't want them to grow too big. If the leaves yellow, give a very diluted liquid fertiliser to pep them up, or check you are not over watering.
