Small heads of vivid bloom open en masse in summer (for us, late November to January). The flowers emerge green and gradually mature to burgundy creating a lovely effect. This also means you have a long show as they are decorative from the get go.

Allium `Drumsticks` flowers are long lasting and fantastic for cutting, they will last up to two weeks in a vase.

Allium `Drumsticks` make a good companion for ornamental grasses and will mix extremely well with perennials. They are at home in the veggie patch and a nice compliment to Roses. Of course, they look amazing when planted in large drifts. In short, they can be easily used to create stunning effects.

Alliums are tough, hardy, and beautiful too! They are in the onion family and when bruised, the foliage smells just like onions. The leaves of Allium Drumsticks grow up to 30cm long.

Plant Alliums into well drained soil in a sunny position. They need at least six hours sun and a warm spot in the garden in order to thrive, but aren't fussy about soil or water. Plant to a depth of around 10-15cm, or four times the height of the bulb.

Allium bulbs are best left to naturalise; lifting and dividing only as they become overcrowded. This means you can relax and leave them in the ground year after year and simply enjoy the late spring flowers! For best blooms, add a well balanced fertiliser in summer.

It is also a good idea to protect the foliage from slugs and snails.
