Botanical Name: Hemerocallis x hybrids
Family: Asphodelaceae
Plant Type: Semi evergreen perennial
Size (HxW): 30-65cm x 30-70cm
Depth & Spacing: The plant may appear dry upon arrival, but they are very tough and recover quickly. Plant to the depth where the crown meets the roots. Spread roots evenly below soil. Water well to remove any air pockets. Space approximately 20-60cm apart.
Soil: Any well drained soil will do, but Daylilies will thrive in humus rich conditions.
Aspect: Full sun to semi shade
Climate: Cool to Tropical
Frost: Hardy
Water: Water to establish, it takes plants around four weeks for their roots to penetrate the surrounding soil and they should be watered every other day or daily during this period. Once established they are dry tolerant though will flower better with moisture in dry times.
Fertiliser: Fertilise in spring each year with a well balanced fertiliser.
Flowering Time: Late spring to early autumn with the main show through summer.
After Flower Care: Remove spent flowers and foliage to tidy, you should be able to do this with a sharp tug.
Notes: Thriving Daylilies will grow into large clumps after a few years. They can be divided as required in spring or autumn. Use a garden fork to dig them out, shake off any excess dirt and make sure that you have a crown with a root system cut with a sharp knife. Trim off the foliage to about 10cm and remove any dead or damaged roots. It is best to replant soon after.
