Iris make stunning garden plants and this one is no exception. It has the edge of sensational purple and green foliage. The new spring foliage has the best colouring and it gradually matures to green in summer – so plant with this in mind to enjoy the best of it in spring.
The sword shaped stems form generous clumps and from late spring to summer are joined by stems with three or four violet flowers each. A magnificent addition to the landscape, border, bog or water garden.
These hardy Iris need practically no maintenance and will prosper in either a moist, well drained or a boggy soil. Iris ‘Gerald Darby’ is a marginal aquatic Iris that can be grown in standing water up to 10cm deep.

Plant so the crown is just below the soil surface. Water in well, it takes around 4-6 weeks for the rhizome to establish in the soil. The leaves are winter dormant.

This Iris is best left to naturalise where it will gradually multiply with underground rhizomes to form nice clumps. They will flower more prolifically as they establish. You will need to dig and divide every four or five years so, making them ideal for low maintenance gardens.

Iris x robusta is a hybrid of I. versicolour and I. viginica, two American Iris.
