A useful, evergreen ground cover for shade with stunning foliage and gorgeous blooms. The rounded leaves are mid to deep green with handsome silver patterns and a mahogany reverse. Tall stems of little white and pink flowers float above the foliage in spring and summer like a flutter of butterflies. Can be grown outside or as a lovely indoor or patio plant in pots and baskets.
Strawberry Begonia holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit so you know it has earned its place in the garden.
The stems spread gradually through underground stolons, similar to strawberries, which is where one of its common name comes from. As it becomes established it will gradually ramble to a useful clump. The leaves grow 15-20cm and the flowers tower above to 60cm.
Plant in moderately fertile to humus rich, moist, well drained soil. Best in a woodland light – filtered light to morning sun or part shade. You could also grow in rockeries, along pathways, garden edging, in pots or hanging baskets. Water to establish, it will take around 4-6 weeks for the roots to penetrate the surrounding soil and they should be regularly watered until then. Once established they are quite dry tolerant. They tend to rot in boggy soils.
Saxifraga stolonifera is commonly known as Strawberry Begonia, Creeping Saxifrage, Strawberry Geranium and Strawberry Saxifrage. They are endemic to China, Japan and South Korea.
