These fascinating carnivorous plants will create great interest in your garden.
The Pitcher Plant produces pink/red traps with a narrow waist. The ‘Pitcher’s’ are designed to trap insects. They are filled with a sticky substance that attracts the insects, once inside, the insects are paralysed and then slowly digested by the plant. A great mozzie deterrent around the BBQ!
Pitcher Plants are exceptionally easy to grow, and like a similar environment to Cymbidium Orchids. Plant in loose, peaty soil, or a mix specifically for carnivorous plants. Keep them moist during the warmer months, then allow the soil to almost dry out before watering again in cool weather. Grow in a bright light position. A diluted, Orchid or Epiphyte fertiliser applied during the growth season every couple of weeks is recommended.
Nepenthes ventricosa produces a beautiful array of pitchers, and displays well in a hanging basket.
