Lovely lilac to mauve flowers open late spring to early summer. The flowers have golden orange crests and some venation pattern on the petals. The blooms are 3-4cm across and open of narrow branches.
The long, arching, grass like leaves of Crested Iris grow up to 30cm long. They form a handsome, dense clump. The leaves turn yellow in autumn and should then be cut back.
Plant Crested Iris in humus rich, moist, well drained soil. An acid to neutral PH is preferred. Water to establish and keep moist in active growth.
Crested Iris, or Iris gracilipes is a woodland Iris from Japan and China.
