Larger, more rounded petals of solid colour. Woodland Crocus 'Ruby Giant' multiplies well and has elegant appeal. The winter flowers are rich purple with a red sheen, fading at the throat.
The name Crocus 'Ruby Giant' is a little far fetched, though the flowers are bigger than your average Woodland Crocus, they are around the same size as a Dutch Crocus. The petals have a small ruby sheen, but they are really purple. But what is in a name?! The flowers still look so sweet and are super easy to grow and in the right conditions will multiply freely.
A small cluster of narrow, deep green leaves surround the blooms of Woodland Crocus. Each leaf has a central, silver stripe.
Woodland Crocus, as the name suggests are more tolerant of shade than most Crocus varieties.
Crocus grow well in Cool to Mediterranean climates where they look best in rockeries, beds and pots. Plant into a well drained soil.
Woodland Crocus bulbs don't need to be lifted every year, you can allow them to naturalise and will only need to dig and divide after four or five years.
It is a good idea to protect new growth from slugs and snails. Fertilise your Woodland Crocus annually in spring. They are suitable for planting in pots, rockeries and towards the front of garden beds.
