Bergenia Red Beauty
Tough and long blooming.
This product is currently out of stock and unavailable.
The magenta pink flowers open from late winter and bloom and bloom and bloom. They look fantastic in combination with the glossy, evergreen foliage, this is a winner.
Bergenia 'Red Beauty' doesn't like it to be too hot and dry or cold and wet - anything in between they will prosper. This top quality ground cover requires little to no maintenance. It grows well in pots, not to mention embankments, dry or moist (but not soggy) shade gardens, even exposed areas with poor soils. You can even use Bergenias to help cover the fading foliage of your spring bulbs.
Bergenia may have fallen out of fashion but we think they have been underutilised and are will make a strong comeback with some great new varieties.
The thick, leathery foliage is what gives Bergenia its common name of Elephant Ears. The leaves turn bronze-red in winter, when the weather cools.
The magenta blooms open on green and red stems, in more mild climates they will flower most of the year. What's more, the flowers last well in a vase.
Plant Bergenia in any well drained soil in a full sun to part shade position. Mulch in autumn and that is about it! You can remove spent flowers and leaves to tidy in spring but they need nary more care than that.
The botanical name of Bergenia was given to honour German botanist and Doctor, Karl August von Bergen (1704-1759).
