Botanical: Plectranthus saccatus
Plant Type: Evergreen perennial
Size (HxW): Elvis: 70cm x 80cm. Idol: 30- 40cm x 30-40cm. Lady and Diva: 40-50cm x 40-50cm.
Depth & Spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot with the roots spread evenly below the soil surface. Spacing see above.
Soil: Moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil.
Aspect: Filtered light to part sun with protection from the hot afternoon rays.
Climate: Cool to Sub Tropical
Frost: Tender, growing them under trees or in pots will protect them from damage. If frost damage occurs, it is best to wait until spring to remove it. In areas of heavy frost it should be treated as an annual.
Water: Water to establish, then only if rainfall is low. They are dry tolerant once established. They won’t tolerate wet feet – it is good to remember this if you are growing in pots to ensure they have drainage holes.
Fertiliser: A light application of a general purpose fertiliser in summer is sufficient, they are not heavy feeders. In pots, add a diluted liquid fertiliser monthly during active growth.
Flowering Time: Summer to winter
After Flower Care: A light prune after flowering will keep them happy but isn’t necessary.
Notes: Hailing from the forests of South Africa, they like a layer of mulch, you can add this in spring. In very cold climates they may be deciduous.
