A gorgeous, evergreen ground cover with lovely variegated foliage. The handsome, rounded leaves grow to 3cm across, and smell like mint when you crush them. The foliage is light to mid green and decorated with a cream, marbled pattern. Throughout summer the leaves are crowned with lovely little violet blooms.
The trailing stems of Ground Ivy look wonderful spilling over the edges of pots and hanging baskets.
Quick to grow and establish Ground Ivy is tolerant of sun and shade. It isn’t fussy about soil as long as it isn’t sitting in water. As it is a stoloniferous plant (spreads underground through root nodules) it has the potential to become invasive, you can easily curtail this by pruning the stems or pulling them up – they are easy to pull so it is not a back breaking process, and it won’t be required for years, if at all. On the upside it works well as a lawn substitute and will even grow in shade. It grows well in pots so if you are worried about it settling in where it isn’t needed pots are the perfect solution.
The leaves are edible, and can be used in salads and soups. Dried leaves can be used in teas. They have even been used to flavour beers and they are high in iron.
