Epiphytic or terrestrial plants with dense rosettes of scaly leaves. The leaves can change colour with the seasons. The flowers open on long lasting, colourful bracts. They can take a year or two to flower.
As Tillandsia plants grow no roots, there is no need for it to be planted. You can glue or wire them to cork, stone, shell or wood or something that won’t absorb too much water, this will give them some support on which to grow. You can just have them sit but they look better with a backing. You can be as creative as you like, just ensure good air flow.
Place Tillandsia in semi shade to bright light, out of direct sunlight. Outdoors the plants should be placed in a semi-shaded spot where there is protection from the winter rains and frosts.
Tillandsia should be allowed to almost dry out between watering. It is easy to tell when the plant needs more water as the leaves should be erect and firm, they will soften and shrink if more water is needed.
