The new spring foliage is bright red, maturing to burgundy with a green blush in summer. As the weather cools in autumn the foliage turns bright red again before falling. The foliage is deeply divided and looks soft, dense and lush.
Acer ‘Skeeter’s Broom’ has an upright habit. And moderate growth rate. You will get the best autumn colour from your Acer in areas with cool climates. Grows up to 2.5m over 10-20 years, slow but steady and long lived.
A sport of Acer ‘Bloodgood’ from a Witch’s Broom. A Witch’s Broom is a deformed woody growth, where the normal growth is changed, the branch is more dense and twiggy, like the head of a broom. That single Witch’s broom was spotted by a Nurserymen then grafted and propagated to become Acer ‘Skeeter’s Broom’.
Plant Acer ‘Skeeter’s Broom’ in a full sun to part shade location. Ensure the soil is well drained, humus rich soils are ideal but they aren’t too fussy. Acer are dry hardy once they establish. Suitable for planting in a pot, ensure you keep it moist.
Use as a specimen, in pots or borders.
