A nicely rounded, deciduous shrub with mid to dark green leaves. The flowers are densely packed, Lace cap type. The inner, infertile flowers are a deeper mauve purple shade. The fertile, outer blooms are white to lilac. Hydrangeas grow best planted in a sheltered position of the garden where the roots are cool and moist. Add plenty of organic matter to the soil and you will be rewarded with masses of stunning blooms. Hydrangea flowers are good for picking. To make them last longer, bring a bucket of water out with you to the garden, plunge them in as soon as you have cut them. Once you are inside, cut them again and hold them in hot, boiled water for 30seconds before arranging in a vase.
