The urn shaped flowers of Peruvian Amaryllis are a stunning shade of orange red. This bold colour stands out with the blooms opening in clusters of 3-6. Each waxy flower is 3-3.5cm long. The blooms open on straight stems spring to summer before the foliage emerges.
The foliage is mid to deep green and lance shaped with prominent veins. They grow up to 40cm long.
The botanical name is know Stenomesson miniatum it was previously Urceolina peruviana; Urceolina translating to small pitcher.
Plant in moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny location. Water in then keep relatively moist in active growth. Add some liquid fertiliser fortnightly when in bloom. Stop watering once the leaves have faded. Peruvian Lilies become dormant through winter and you should add some dry mulch at this time to protect from frost.
The roots resent disturbance so choose a permanent position for Peruvian Amaryllis, and be patient they won't bloom at their best until they have settled in. They are also suitable for pots.
