Soft, to deep purple blush to the petals with a white mid rib. The petals have a smattering of deeper purple spots. There is a flash of gold in the centre of the bloom. The flowers are some of the biggest of the Toad Lilies, around 3-4cm across. Toad Lilies are great because they grow and flower in shade, late in the season.
The dark green leaves spread up the stems in an attractive fashion. Each leaf grows to around 12cm. In a shady garden they are an excellent compliment to Winter Roses because they flower alternately.
Toad Lilies are a woodland plant that require a humus rich, moist but well drained soil in semi shade to filtered light. Water to establish and keep moist during active growth. Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Toad Lilies also grow well with Hostas and other woodland plants.
Whilst Toad Lilies or Tricyrtis sp. look like Orchids, they are in the Lily family. It is variably suggested they are commonly known as Toad Lilies because they like to grow where Toads live; or because they are spotted like toads; or because of their lumpy nectaries.
