The upright stems of hooded flowers open over a lush carpet of fuzzy foliage.
The flowers open in whorls, progressively up the stem. The blooms show off for quite a time, from late spring to autumn. With blooms intermittently opening along the stems there is a great, massed effect of colour and bloom from these plants. The stems can even be left standing over winter.
Phlomis is perfect for beds and borders. They are at home in dry gardens and stunning in cottage gardens. The mid green leaves vary between 6cm and 20cm, they are heart shaped with a rough texture.
Plant Phlomis in moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. Water in well, they then become dry tolerant once established.
Phlomis is native to the rocky slopes of Turkey and Syria.
