Bergenia Winter Glow
Evergreen with winter colour.
This product is currently out of stock and unavailable.

Strong, magenta pink flowers open in spring and autumn, with spot flowers through the year. Bergenia 'Winter Glow's' heart shaped leaves are 25cm long and 20cm across. In cool weather the leaves take on a handsome purple red blush.
Bergenia 'Winter Glow' makes a nice edging plant, ground cover, rockery plant anywhere that is out of the hot afternoon sun. They are tolerant of poor soils, coastal conditions and cope well with neglect.
Commonly known as Elephant Ears, Bergenia may have fallen out of fashion but we think they have been underutilised and should make a comeback. Especially the new, improved forms. Both the leaves and the flowers can be used in cut flower arrangements.
Plant Bergenia 'Winter Glow' in any well drained soil in a full sun to part shade position. Mulch with falling leaves in autumn and that is about it! You can remove spent flowers and leaves to tidy in spring but they need nary more care than that.
The botanical name of Bergenia was given to honour German botanist and Doctor, Karl August von Bergen (1704-1759). Bergenias are known as Pigsqueak in the USA because when you rub the leaves together they sound like a pig. It's a long bow as far as I can tell but it is a fun sound!
